Get to know Miss Alphabet
It's hard to say when exactly Liz
Yada decided to become a designer; but she recalls a few things from her
childhood such as her favorite scene from Disney's Cinderella (where the
mice sewed up a dress), and the Reading Rainbow episode about the
fashion world. Born in an artistic family, she always had a thing for
the unusual. She also learned to sew at age 12 and occasionally would
make pillows, sew patches on jeans, and even make jeans bigger by sewing
a strip of crazy material up the sides.
Finally, in her senior year of high school the career counselor asked
her what her three career choices were. "Fashion designer" was one of
the three blurted out, so shortly after receiving info from design
colleges around California she enrolled in the fashion program at
College of the Sequoias in her hometown of Visalia, CA.
Her clothing line, Miss Alphabet, was born in 2004 as a way of raising
money for a trip to Portland, Oregon with her best friend. Miss Alphabet
is a reference to The Glove's song "Mr. Alphabet Says" and has been her
Internet handle since 1996.
Today, Liz has created over 400 garments for Miss Alphabet. She looks to
designers such as Patricia Field, Betsey Johnson, Tarina Tarantino, and
Mary Quant; as well as Japanese street fashion, Barbie, 20th century
vintage, and children's clothing for inspiration. Liz is quite
approachable, so don't hesitate to drop her a line with questions or
comments!
